My SEO Music Mix

20 Gig Dell DjA few people in my office have wanted to know the kinds of music that I listen to here at work and I figured I'd share a little bit about that in today's post.

For the longest time, our office enforced a "no head-phones" rule, which, just as it sounds, banned the listening to portable music devices such as CD and MP3 players. That was up until a few months ago when the ban was lifted.

Today, I find myself juggling between 2 MP3 players every week. One is an office 2Gig iPod Nano which helps me (and the rest of the SEO team) to keep updated on industry news via podcasts. The player is set to automatically download about 6 or 7 shows each week and remove those from the previous week. We have a very sweet system in place.

The second MP3 player is my personal 20Gig Dell DJ, which currently has just over 3Gigs of music. I have created several play-lists to satisfy my music needs for just about any occasion, and yes I have one specially created for when I'm optimizing websites. I call it "SEO Mix", however, I also listen to it when I'm working on my site or working on graphic projects. I guess you can say it's one of the many ingredients in my SEO secret sauce... because as we all know, behind every good SEO is good play-list of music.

So what does my "SEO Mix" consist of? Well, before I get into that I want share with you a little bit of information regarding my taste in music. I was raised in a very diverse town and have learned to enjoy many genres of music. My favorite genres are Rock and Rap (what can I say I'm a sucker for guitar solos and great beats), however I listen to JUST about everything.

Do you have a special album or play-list that you jam out to at work or one that helps you to remain focused and motivated when optimizing or designing sites (or maybe one that decreases the level of annoying background conversations and noises)? If so, I'd love to hear it.

  • ACDC - "Back in Black" is one of my all-time favorite songs. It always gets me going and puts me in a good mood.

Aerosmith - I went to their concert when I was in college. "Janie's got a Gun" and "Sweet Emotion" rocked. I like most of their 70's, 80's/early 90's music better than the rest of it.

I'm not familiar with Alter Bridge.

    Blink 182 - I LOVE "I Miss You".

Bon Jovi - What don't I like from them?! Blaze of Glory, You Give Love a Bad Name, Living on a Prayer (only song I've Karaoke to).

  • When I read the title of this post - I immediately knew I was going to comment.

First off, I'd like to say, that one time we optimized to Juke Box Hero was awesome, but also a little cheezy. I still stand behind that not only is that song cool, it also simultaneously oozes with big-hair/spandex cheeze.

So, while I don't have a play list created exclusively for optimizing, although, you've given me a great idea, I do have playlists on my 4th-generation-U2-ipod-soon-to-be-upgraded-to-limited-edition-U2-video-ipod (so I can enjoy the Kids and the Hall and the A-Team while I optimize).

I have 2 playlists dedicated to 80's music, one better than the other. The list of my 80's tunes is as follows:

    The Living Daylights (A-Ha)
    The Lovecats (Cure)
    Close to Me (Cure)
    Planet Earth (Duran Duran)
    Serious (Duran Duran)
    True Faith (New Order)
    Bizarre Love Triangle (New Order)
    Blue Monday (New Order)
Love Comes Quickly (Pet Shop Boys)
    Heart (Pet Shop Boys)
    Invisible Sun (The Police)
    Ghost Dancing (Simple Minds)
    This Charming Man (The Smiths)
    High (Cure)
    Sacred (Depeche Mode)
    Notorious (Duran Duran)
    Mystify (Live)(INXS)
    Strangelove (Depeche Mode)

Yeah, there's some songs you haven't either heard in a while or heard of at all!

Right now, my iPod is sitting around 2,000 songs. So I generally just let it randomly choose from the main list. Great post!

  • Thanks for the comment Liz. It's good to know that we can switch MP3 players for a day and be satisfied with each other's music.

Jessica - I remember when we jammed out to "Juke Box Hero". We used my Dell DJ and a head-jack splitter. We need to do that again!

On a side note... you really do listen to some oldies. Thanks for the comment.

  • Lol. Hey Karl. It was freaky when I read this. We like the exact same types of music. If I get back in there I may have to steal your MP3 player along with that notebook of SEO secrets. HeHe.

  • I can't listen to lyrics while working... so, I listen to Jazz stations through Sirius online. If I'm deep in code, I turn on some classical... Can't you just see me in a movie pounding away at code with the cameras panning around me to the beat of a classical soundtrack in the background?

    LOL...

Any other time it's anything from Linkin Park, Incubus, Deftones, Smashing Pumpkins... to Eminem, Kanye, Black Eyed Peas... to DJ Marski, DJ Jean, DJ Barthezz, Tiesto, Mixin Mark...

  • Wow Disco... I would have never figured you for a classical or for a jazz kinda guy. Obviously the name Disco implies another musical form, and I figured that you had a little Rock / Rap combination in you just from reading your Blog.

I can understand how lyrics in the background could disrupt one's thoughts, especially when your "coding" sites and so forth. We actually have someone on our All Web team who enjoys listening to both classical and jazz while working... its just not for me though.

    Thanks for the comment!

  • Hey - nice post Karl.

My roll is kind of out of the ordinary, but everyone has their own taste -

    Dave Matthews
    Casting Crowns
    Hillsong
    Brian Setzer
    Jeremy Camp
    Bob Seger
    United
    Paul Baloche

I've noticed it really helps me to listen to music when I work - for some reason I can concentrate better. I just tune everything else out except the music and my work...sweetness.

    :)

  • Wow ... lots of music fans. OK then, here's a challenge for all you budding seo musicians. Create a paridy version of your favorite song, with a search spin, and submit it to our Best Search Lyrics Contest at http://www.searchenginepeople.com/contest/seo-related-lyric-contest/. Its all in good fun ... nothing too serious.

    Lemme see:

Back in black ... hmmmm that could lend itself nicely to the theme.

  • Hey, just found this page searching for the term "seo music", as it's the two subjects my new blog focusses on. As a fellow SEO muso, I thought you might like to take a look :)
