Last week my boss - Michael Roebuck (aka bossman) - published a very cool Yahoo! Store work-around on his blog. His idea, while simple, will help Yahoo! Store owners to use their store's gift certificate feature with both online and offline transactions. The best part is that his method will allow your Yahoo! Store the ability to track the gift certificate as it normally would without interrupting any of the analytical data that you would otherwise be getting. How, exactly? Here's a quote from Michael's post:
"Yahoo! Gift Certificates are designed for use on websites. They don't work very well with brick and mortar stores. The easiest way for a customer to use an online gift certificate in the retail store would be to create a dummy item for $0.01 and after the customer leaves the store, place an order for that amount. That will deduct the amount the customer spent from the remaining gift certificate balance."
Pretty simple, right? And easy!
Previously, Yahoo! Store gift certificates were only to be used with online purchases. However, with this work-around, store owners can now offer their gift certificate customers the extra added benefit of being able to shop either online or offline... a HUGE plus if you ask me.
Great job, Michael! To read more of Michaels thoughts, tips, tricks, and how-to's on Yahoo! Store design and development, be sure to check out his blog. And, while you're there, you might as well subscribe too. You'll be glad you did.
